Idk how to do the water filter thing but imagine this image with that. What do you MEAN homelessness is a one time decision that doesn't change anything about a character. I can see how having her relatives interacting with her would give people an easier time exploring her as a character, but if you aren't half assing your character exploration and essays homelessness is a great backstory to explore. Look into stories of homeless people and tell me their stories aren't just as deep and fully fledged as those about people from broken homes... Not to mention that these things often go hand in hand. That's something that could've (and not too unlikely to have) happened to Susie too, y'know
